In the hematological oncology department of the Chernihiv Regional Children’s Hospital, the age of patients ranges from 1 month to 18 years. These are children and teenagers with a completely non-childish look. In their eyes you can see sadness, pain, lust for life, hatred for illness. Every day they are forced to win every breath and this struggle lasts not a month, not two or even three.
The duration of the course of intensive chemotherapy is eight months, which in most cases extends over more than a year. After all, from time to time, due to the deterioration of the tests, it is necessary to suspend the treatment process and give the opportunity for the small organism to gain strength.
Day after day, children live according to the same schedule, in the same ward with the same view from the window. No active walks with friends, no games in the river, no riding on scooters and bicycles, no holidays in cafes. Such gray mundanity oppresses even adults, not to mention children, whose world has suddenly narrowed to the walls of the hospital.
Moreover, the treatment is accompanied by unpleasant procedures, such as punctures, injections, droppers, and daily examinations. After a certain time, sadness envelops even those children who were not afraid of injections before, and all because they have to endure and put up with their situation every day.
It was in order to support children during treatment that the “Award for Courage” campaign was created. It operates on a permanent basis and is an ordinary box filled with toys, books, stationery, games, creative kits, etc. Every time after a procedure that brings tears to the eyes of young patients, the medical staff brings them to the “magic box” and gives them the opportunity to choose a reward for themselves.
The gift gives a smile, distracts from tears and gives the little one the opportunity to feel like an ordinary child. It is for this reason that we regularly fill the box with various children’s goods. To collect small rewards, our team often organizes various events and initiates collaborations. To fill the box of courage, we were repeatedly helped by KP “House of Books” ChMR, Vivat Kancelaria, Yuki store, IT companies SendPulse, Valtech and others. Various benefactors of the city, volunteers and simply caring people also often joined the campaign.
