Blood donation is an important element in the formation of comprehensive care for children with cancer. Our patients are constantly in need of transfusions and different blood components. Donor centers are usually able to meet the basic requirements of hospitals. However, during emergencies or an urgent need for platelets, the process becomes more complicated.
The procedure of obtaining the required blood component for the patient is implemented precisely through Donor Centers. Hospitals make a request, and the center employees search for suitable donors in their database and contact them. The peculiarity of obtaining platelets as a component of blood is that this transfusion must be carried out day by day. Also, for the donor, this means that he/she has to put aside work, personal affairs and come to donate platelets. The donor has to respond at this very moment. Unfortunately, Donor Centers are not always able to find dedicated donors, in a timely manner.
This identified problem prompted us to look for alternative solutions. Thus, the idea of forming our own donor base arose. With the help of our volunteers and social networks, we have formed our own donor base, which includes 243 people in the city of Chernihiv. These donors are ready to help “here and now” at all times.
The coordinated teamwork of the doctors at the Donor Centers and Evum ensures uninterrupted supply of all the necessary blood components to our young patients.
